NOVEMBER Detox: Why It is Important for Addiction Recovery, But Not Enough

One of the first steps in addiction treatment is withdrawal stabilization, or what is commonly known as detox. Because stopping using drugs or alcohol abruptly can be dangerous, it is a medical procedure to safely remove an addictive substance from the body, requiring 24/7 supervision.

During the 3 -10 day withdrawal stabilization period, there is little that can be done to understand the underlying causes of the addiction, what other physical damage may have been done by the abuse or whether there are co-occurring disorders like depression, anxiety or ADHD, so detox alone is only the beginning of treatment.

With Dr. Irina Gromov, addiction psychiatrist at Enterhealth, learn about the intricacies required of a patient’s addiction treatment plan in order to allow the time for the brain and body to heal and the proper coping strategies learned to manage this chronic brain disease of addiction.
